Recreation:Area Points of Interest:* Hood River Museum - Driving Time: 1 minute. The Hood River County Historical Museum is dedicated to the collection, preservation and display of valuable documents, photographs and artifacts that reflect and portray the "story" of Hood River County and the Mid-Columbia area. Through exhibits, special events and educational programs the museum is a vital and active part of the community. April through August - Daily 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Sundays 12:00 Noon to 4:00 p.m. September and October - Daily 12:00 Noon to 4:00 p.m. 1-541-386-6772. * Historic Columbia River Highway - Driving Time: 4 minutes. Hood River Trailhead. Part of Samuel Lancaster's original Columbia River Highway, this 4.6 mile paved trail starts in Hood River and winds around the basalt bluffs of the Columbia, goes through the famed Mosier Twin Tunnels, and ends in Mosier. This trial is perfect for running, biking, or hiking as it is closed to motorized vehicles. If time allows, also check out the driving portion of the highway, beginning just 30 miles west of Hood River at Interstate 84, Exit 35. A collection of falls and off road hikes are available, including Multnomah Falls, an Oregon landmark. * Panorama Point Park - Driving Time: 5 minutes. Make sure to check out this great drive-to-viewpoint located just outside downtown Hood River off of Highway 35. This small park offers a great panoramic view from Mt. Hood, over the valley, to Mt. Adams. * Mosier Creek Falls/Pioneer Cemetery - Driving Time: 9 minutes. A beautiful two-tiered 100-foot waterfall provides a popular swimming hole and sunning spot. It also features park benches, easy trails that run along the rim of Mosier Creek Gorge, and the Pioneer Cemetery. Simply take Interstate 84 East to Exit 69, drive through Mosier and cross the bridge, and look for a large gravel parking area on the left-hand side. * Dog Mountain Trail - Driving Time: 15 minutes. This popular location for hiking and wildflower displays is known for its epic views of the Columbia Gorge and neighboring mountain peaks. There are three trails that lead to the summit of the 2,948-foot mountain, and although difficult, will prove an awarding way to spend a day. To get there, simply cross the Hood River Bridge into Washington and go left on Highway 14 for 11.3 miles. Once you pass milepost 54, look for the large parking area on the right hand side of the highway. * Punchbowl Falls - Driving Time: 17 minutes. Another popular swimming and cliff jumping area, Punchbowl Falls offers spectacular 75-foot columnar basalt walls that line the edge of the Hood River. The steep trail will bring you to the falls and fish ladder, and the main trail continues downstream to the joining of the east and west forks of the Hood. To get there, take Tucker Rd out of town towards Parkdale. At the Wind Master Market Texaco, go left and drive for 3.5 miles. At the Odell/Parkdale junction stay right, following the signs for Dee. Turn right at Dee (an old lumber mill) and cross the train tracks and bridge. At the intersection go right onto Punchbowl Road and follow it, staying right, for 1 mile to a gravel pullout on the right side of the road. If you cross a bridge you have gone too far.* McCall Point Trail - Driving Time: 18 minutes. If you are a wildflower enthusiast, be sure to plan a few hours to hike this 1.5 mile trail. In April and May, the whole area explodes in color, and the 1,000 foot gain provides stunning views of Mt. Hood, Mt. Adams, and the Columbia River from Hood River to Rowena. Take Interstate 84 East to Exit 69. Turn right onto the Historic Highway and follow 7 miles out to the Rowena Crest Viewpoint. The trail starts at the south side of the parking area. * Columbia Gorge Discovery Center - Driving Time: 20 minutes. This fantastic museum aims to inspire appreciation and stewardship of the Columbia River Gorge and Wasco County through collection, preservation, and interpretation of cultural and natural history resources. Explore 40 million years of geologic history, 10,000 years of cultural history, and 150 years of modern history through interactive multi-media exhibits at the official interpretive center of the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area. Open daily 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. 1-541-296-8600 * Bonneville Dam - Driving Time: 24 minutes. The first dam built on the Columbia River, finished in 1938, now houses a visitor center, fish viewing windows, and sturgeon ponds. At the visitor center, learn about the numerous dams along the Columbia and their role in our modern times. Also watch salmon and steelhead make their way upriver through the viewing windows. At the Hatchery, feed sturgeons and steelheads, and view rearing ponds full of fingerling smolts. The Dam is located at Exit 40 off of Interstate 84. Open daily 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. 1-541-374-8820. * Tamanawas Falls Trail - Driving Time: 25 minutes. This is a favorite among Hood River locals, a 2-mile trail leading to a spectacular 125-foot waterfall. The trail follows the bank of Cold Spring Creek for most of the way, and at the falls a rocky slope leads to a dry alcove behind the cascade. Simply follow Highway 35 South for 23.5 miles. A large gravel parking area is on the right hand side of the road just before Sherwood Campground.* Columbia Gorge Interpretive Center - Driving Time: 25 minutes. The mission of the Columbia Gorge Interpretive Center Museum is to preserve, conserve, exhibit and interpret the cultural and natural history of the Columbia River Gorge. The architectural amazing building holds exhibits on the water route of the Lewis and Clark expedition and Oregon Trail, the world's largest Rosary collection, transportation on and along the river, and a restored Corliss steam engine that powered sawmills of the last century. Open daily 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. 1-800-991-2338. * Horsethief Butte - Driving Time: 28 minutes. Located just northeast of The Dalles, a long 100-foot high outcropping of basalt provides a variety of trails that lead up to, around, and into it. If you look closely, you may even find many faded pictographs and petroglyphs decorating the rock walls. On summer weekends, Ranger guided tours are available nearby the park and features some of the best and most famous petroglyphs in the Northwest. Call 1-509-767-1159 for details and reservations. From Hood River, cross the Hood River Bridge into Washington and go right on Highway 14 for 21 miles. It is located at milepost 86.5, 1.5 miles past Horsethief Lake State Park. * Beacon Rock - Driving Time: 30 minutes. This historic Gorge landmark is the basalt core of an eroded volcano that rises 848 feet above the Columbia River. Lewis and Clark explored and named this landmark, and it is said to be the second largest free-standing monolith in the world. From Hood River, take Interstate 84 West to Exit 44. Cross over the Columbia River on the Bridge of the Gods and turn left onto Highway 14. Follow for 6.5 miles to the clearly marked parking area. * Ice Cave - Driving Time: 40 minutes. Best when visited in the spring, winter water seeps into and drips from the caves ceiling creating an abundance of beautiful icicles. There are floor to ceiling frozen pillars, stalactites and stalagmites. Even in the summer, the cave is very cold and slippery, so be sure to dress accordingly. To get there, cross the Hood River Bridge into Washington and take a right on Highway 14. Follow for 1.5 miles, then take a right on Alt. 141. After 2 miles, take a left onto Highway 141 and continue for 19 miles to Trout Lake. At the gas station, stay left on Alt. 141 and drive another 6.5 miles. Continue straight when Alt. 141 turns into FS24, and turn left at the sign for the Ice Cave. * Lost Lake - Driving Time: 45 minutes. A gorgeous natural lake located on the north side of Mt. Hood, Lost Lake is one of the most photographed lakes in the northwest. Offering fishing, hiking, camping, old-growth trees, boat rentals, day-use picnic areas, and most of all beauty, this lake has something for everyone. If you're up for a difficult hike, try the Lost Lake Butte trail which ends at an old-look out site atop the butte with views of Mt. Hood, Mt. Adams, Mt. St. Helen, Mt. Best when visited in the spring, winter water seeps into and drips from the caves ceiling creating an abundance of beautiful icicles. There are floor to ceiling frozen pillars, stalactites and stalagmites. Even in the summer, the cave is very cold and slippery, so be sure to dress accordingly. To get there, cross the Hood River Bridge into Washington and take a right on Highway 14. Follow for 1.5 miles, then take a right on Alt. 141. After 2 miles, take a left onto Highway 141 and continue for 19 miles to Trout Lake. At the gas station, stay left on Alt. 141 and drive another 6.5 miles. Continue straight when Alt. 141 turns into FS24, and turn left at the sign for the Ice Cave. * Lost Lake - Driving Time: 45 minutes. A gorgeous natural lake located on the north side of Mt. Hood, Lost Lake is one of the most photographed lakes in the northwest. Offering fishing, hiking, camping, old-growth trees, boat rentals, day-use picnic areas, and most of all beauty, this lake has something for everyone. If you're up for a difficult hike, try the Lost Lake Butte trail which ends at an old-look out site atop the butte with views of Mt. Hood, Mt. Adams, Mt. St. Helen, Mt. Part of Samuel Lancaster's original Columbia River Highway, this 4.6 mile paved trail starts in Hood River and winds around the basalt bluffs of the Columbia, goes through the famed Mosier Twin Tunnels, and ends in Mosier. This trial is perfect for running, biking, or hiking as it is closed to motorized vehicles. If time allows, also check out the driving portion of the highway, beginning just 30 miles west of Hood River at Interstate 84, Exit 35. A collection of falls and off road hikes are available, including Multnomah Falls, an Oregon landmark. * Panorama Point Park - Driving Time: 5 minutes. Make sure to check out this great drive-to-viewpoint located just outside downtown Hood River off of Highway 35. This small park offers a great panoramic view from Mt. Hood, over the valley, to Mt. Adams. * Mosier Creek Falls/Pioneer Cemetery - Driving Time: 9 minutes. A beautiful two-tiered 100-foot waterfall provides a popular swimming hole and sunning spot. It also features park benches, easy trails that run along the rim of Mosier Creek Gorge, and the Pioneer Cemetery. Simply take Interstate 84 East to Exit 69, drive through Mosier and cross the bridge, and look for a large gravel parking area on the left-hand side. * Dog Mountain Trail - Driving Time: 15 minutes. This popular location for hiking and wildflower displays is known for its epic views of the Columbia Gorge and neighboring mountain peaks. There are three trails that lead to the summit of the 2,948-foot mountain, and although difficult, will prove an awarding way to spend a day. To get there, simply cross the Hood River Bridge into Washington and go left on Highway 14 for 11.3 miles. Once you pass milepost 54, look for the large parking area on the right hand side of the highway. * Punchbowl Falls - Driving Time: 17 minutes. Another popular swimming and cliff jumping area, Punchbowl Falls offers spectacular 75-foot columnar basalt walls that line the edge of the Hood River. The steep trail will bring you to the falls and fish ladder, and the main trail continues downstream to the joining of the east and west forks of the Hood. To get there, take Tucker Rd out of town towards Parkdale. At the Wind Master Market Texaco, go left and drive for 3.5 miles. At the Odell/Parkdale junction stay right, following the signs for Dee. Turn right at Dee (an old lumber mill) and cross the train tracks and bridge. At the intersection go right onto Punchbowl Road and follow it, staying right, for 1 mile to a gravel pullout on the right side of the road. If you cross a bridge you have gone too far.* McCall Point Trail - Driving Time: 18 minutes. If you are a wildflower enthusiast, be sure to plan a few hours to hike this 1.5 mile trail.
